It's all part of living here. People have ethnic identities. Hawaiian, Portagee, Filipino, Japanese, Chinese, haole, and so forth, including hapa. "Hawaiian" is taken, big deal, no reason to feel you don't have a place.
I can't remember if or when someone explained this to me or I just got it on my own, probably because I just went "got it" and moved on. When I moved here I was eager to learn the local usage of words and customs, not interested in challenging and getting offended at every little thing; that would have worn me out.
