This is the most depressing news I've heard about Pahoa in a long time. Drive in or by Pahoa and see a bunch of tacky, stinky fast food chains. I thought I moved here to get away from such blight. Fast food chains mean fast food trash and people eat there more frequently once they arrive. This is about the last thing the people of this area need nutrition wise and the food they sell is the antithesis of sustainability. Diabetes rates have doubled nationally in the past 10 years, primarily due to obesity, due to poor diets. Long's doesn't' bother me so much, but I hope it doesn't hurt the guys who own the pharmacy near Malama. This kind of feels like the beginning of the end for Pahoa having any quirky charm. I can't imagine considering bringing this tacky development an accomplishment. A handful more minimum wage jobs to keep overall wages low around here. Whoopee!
