For those who support this developement but desire sustainablility for our island, this is a backwards, short-sighted move. I too have votef for Fred Blas and I think he will still prove to be more active/proactive than F. Hanohano has proven to be. I think Fred and MOST other supporters of this developement have good intentions in a time when job prospects are low amd unemployment high. However, like Damon pointed out, in the "LONG" run these buisnesses will heavily stress if not completely shut down our local buisnesses as has happened over and over again in the past. Let's not forget the fact that fast food buisnesses don't sell quality nutrition and are known for exploiting the communities they invade offering low wages for high profits that the local communities sees little of.
The promise of more jobs is almost always the "excuse" used to move in big corporatations Although this will often seem to give some alieviation temporarily, in the long run the corporation knows that this ultimately will increase the communities dependency on that corporations goods and services.
Did our county not just enroll in a prescription discount program? Is there not a brand new pharmacy just opened in Pahoa?
Shouldn't we be loking at helping our local buisnesses secure better prices on goods so they can offer cheaper prices for the consumer?
There will always be a big money man with a promise and a smile telling us all how he can make our lives better. Will Burger King be buying produce and meat from the BI? We have a lot of ferral chickens here, maybe KFC will come and cook 'em up! What these types of buisnesses take from communities is never in balance with what the communities recieve in return, cheap crap made somewhere else at a slave's wages.
Let's not loose the overall picture when times get a little rough. Our ability to endure the harsh times will determine our success at reaching our ultimate goal: an island community that flourishes by it's own means and inginuity in harmony with it's environment and the spirit of Aloha!
