The whale count is a NOAA program run through the Maui Humpback whale Sanctuary. Link:

This is the write up for this years count, which was March 29th... cannot find 2009 date... usually it is run by the Seagrant office at the University here... Sara Peck with Seagrant Kona may have more info on the count...
