HAWAI'I: a US state or a sovereign nation
#30
Haunani-Kay Trask has complex discussion of this in her writings. She refers to "settlers" and "Natives". She caps "Native" because "native" it is a colonial term. She only calls Natives's Hawaiian. And she says if you are a Native to Hawai'i you are "Hawaiian" not "American".... My interpretation of her writings is that if you are one molecule Hawaiian, you are "Hawaiian", not "Settler". I can't find anywhere that she refers to "locals" and she seems to be vague on people brought here as indentured workers. Nor do I know how she treats hanai family who are in a Hawaiian family but are not themselves Hawaiian. Of course, the word "Hawaiian" is an English word, so you are about to offend someone anywhere you go.
