Some of you certainly show signs of paranoia. Owning a gun does not make you paranoid. It makes you a gun owner. I agree that we all have a right to own a gun. Constitution says that. It also calls for due process. My points here are not about defending your life. We are each entitled to defend our lives and will and should.
Thinking your gun(s) will solve the property crime problem is fantasy.
Sending a message to dummies is a fantasy. What I heard from the gun advocates here so far is mostly fantasy. Too many movies I guess. My point is that your fantasies about guns seem to engender thinking that you have the right to turn to lethal remedies for nonviolent crime. Thieves are indeed committing a crime. "Two warning shots to the head" is a greater crime. If you take that step you should hope I am not on your jury.
It does bother me when fantasy reigns on a serious topic. You fantasize that the fact you own guns will terrorize the thieves. They don't know your ass from Adam. They don't intend to know you. They intend to come in when you are not home and they will steal your guns if they are there. Home invasions are extremely rare unless you are a drug dealer. Drug dealers might have guns too. The common run of the mill thieves we have, the vast majority, here commit crimes of opportunity. They wait until you are not home. They come in with high hopes of not confronting the homeowner (you). You fantasize that you will have 100% judgment in all circumstances to make a clear, informed and rational decision. You fantasize that you will be a good shot and you fantasize that you will be praised for your obvious abilities.
Your neighbors are your best protection. When you are home there is really no evidence you need protection. When you are not home your guns won't help you anyway. Your neighbors can help you. Police busting and putting the few thieves away can help you.
I have been robbed at gun point. On one of those occasions I had access to my room mates .45 automatic. I am very glad I didn't go for the gun. The thieves weren't interested in making a mess. They just wanted stuff. I came home unexpectedly. If guns were added to that mix it would have gotten too messy too fast.
If you truly care about crime in your neighborhood you should take the time (it will not take 100% of your time) and get your neighborhood watch up and running. Your Neighborhood watch group should be constantly drumming the Mayor and Council to step up anti crime efforts. The thought that any one of you will, with your few or many guns, turn back the tide of property crime is a Texas fantasy.
