Sustainability and self sufficiency have meaning
#48

In our work coop, we went into it with the understanding that everybody's time was of the same value- engineer, housewife, whatever- an hour was an hour. For a food coop, the same would have to be true- a pound is a pound.

The overhead and expenses associated with some types of labor (medical work or backhoe operation, for instance) are hugely different than for others (say, babysitting or sewing) but this is not to say one is more important than another (I want a competent person babysitting just as much as a competent physician). Certainly it is conceivable that some one-hour-for-one-hour time swapping might work if a person had the luxury to do so or one was "trading up" in the sense that one hour of backhow operation is probably a good deal for a person who would trade an hour of dishwashing services, but maybe not visa versa. How did your crew overcome this obstacle?

Likewise, with goods as opposed to services, how was the differing valuation of items overcome? A pound of turnip, radish, or squash is not probably not exactly equivalent to a pound of nuts, durian, grain, eggs, fish, milk, or chicken. Seems like it would be a tough trade for the person with higher energetics bound in the product versus the lower energetics product if a straight one-pound-for-one-pound trade. How was this overcome?
