My favorite place to go around midnight on a balmy night is Halema'uma'u. I got lucky there one night, figuratively speaking. The stars were blazing and you could see forever. Just a few minutes after we arrived, the plume burst into a column flame with an audible woosh and a light that made the entire caldera glow. No one around other than a very odd gentleman with a flashlight walking along side the road as we were leaving the area. Inexplicable.
Other than that, Ken's House of Pancakes. Avoid all places on Banyan, McKenzie, Poihiki, and any place with eels. And however you choose to arrive at your location, don't drive. Use a broom, a Segway on a dedicated path known only to you, or a helicopter, or have an out-of-body experience (tip: make sure you remember where you left your body, or choose another, nicer body to enter (ask permission)).
