Pump is best by far. A short double like a coach gun will work fine for distances required for home defence. The problem with the double is it's either left empty and then shells have to be located and loaded (in the dark probably) or it's left loaded with just the safety on. The pump can be left with the magazine loaded but with the chamber empty, a much safer option. It can then be brought into action simply by cycling the action with the resulting sound that will scare off most punks. If not, point and pull the trigger. I vote for the light shot but full power. Any direct hit at 15 feet will work regardless of the shot type. The light stuff is just safer for those other than the intended target. I prefer #6 shot. That said, I will probably be holding a Kimber 1911 with 45 HPs. Locally we just had an incident where the ne'er-do-well broke into a home and shot the woman in the neck with a shot gun. Unfortunately for him he just grazed her neck. She grabbed her .40 and put three rounds into him. Amazingly, he was able to flee and drive away. He was later caught and is now in ICU. I guess they caught him a little too soon.

As to the original question, I would suggest purchasing before you move. The only gun shop I visited was one in Hilo and that was several years ago. However, their selection stank and I thought they were expensive. Price wise it's a bad time to purchase most anywhere. Obama's election and the depressed economy has resulted a run on the gun shops and real good deals are hard to find. With the reduced inventory on the island I would imagine the effect is even more pronounced.
