I can not BEGIN to express my frustration over this issue. I truely do not believe that the state needs to get out of the marriage business.... I think the Churches need to get out of the legal definition of it. In church, they celebrate an event. The state defines the term legally and needs to think in terms of civil rights, extending this to everyone. If the state would clearly define this civil right, the insurance companies and everyone else would have to comply as a matter of law.
It is ABSURD that any young person, or ANY PERSON should be ostracized or pressured over what their hearts feel.
I am proud that my own son has been so active with GLSEN and AMFAR and contintues to work for this human rights issue. AS most of you know we open our own hearts and doors to anyone who is honest, sincere and generally a good person.
We here in Puna are special. Most of the people I have met are open minded and welcoming to differences. That pretty much defines Puna to me. Most of us come from somewhere else, have different backgrounds, faiths, educations, experiences. We all benefit by respecting our differences... even celebrating them.
It would be nice if the people who would take rights away from others would just go away. I know that is only wishful thinking, but it is a wish none the less. I do not mind anyone having a different opinion but I detest that that opinion takes rights away from others. That our system even allows this is an embarassment. It will take time but I do believe the American system will work its way though this issue as it has other civil rights issues and come out on the side of equality for everyone.
Isn't it sad that just because someone doesn't like chocolate, they don't want anyone else to have any? It's as straight-forward as that to me. Maintain your own standards for yourself and tolerate others differences, especially when they do not harm you!
As for the "children and grandchildren" comments.... Gay couples use surrogate mothers and fathers, or adopt on a regular basis. I stand strongly in awe of the ability of any loving couple to find a way to make a family and provide a loving, nurturing environment. We were given brains and the ability to understand Biology... so we use it. Makes sense to me!
Okay, I guess the pain pills are pretty well kicked in and I have rambled but Mark and Richard:
I am sad for your loss... it is so unnecessary but for those who would hurt others for no reason.
I am sad for your frustrations with Kaiser; it is very different in California; Kaiser here in Hawaii is very backward on many issues.
I am sad this has to be an issue at all.
However, I am GLAD we have a forum to express our ideas, and such wonderful people as Punawebbers who stand behind one another in support much more often than not.
Hugs to you both.

I want to be the kind of woman that, when my feet
hit the floor each morning, the devil says
"Oh Crap, She's up!"
