I miss the old Saddle Road.
I disagree though that it allowed one to slow down and look at the scenery. If the driver was looking at scenery, they probably ended up as one of the numerous piles of car parts that seemed to be a part of every chunk of lava at each curve.
This morning, I went to Kona via the Saddle. At near the 14MM or so I stopped to check on a rather fresh set of skid marks and a nice new grill from a Suzuki car that was into a set of trees. Must have happened earlier. The rest of the car was not to be found. I was pleased to have not found someone dead.
