Hawaii does not prohibit gun ownership. You can own a gun (handgun or long arm) if you like. The only restrictions is (well within the US Supreme Court ruling) is reasonable licensing, training and registration. So any argument about not being able to own a gun in Hawaii is absolutely false.
The compliant really boils down to carrying a gun in public, off your property. In that regard, Hawaii does have restricted regulations. Using examples of gun ownership to argue carry regulations is like claiming Hawaii prohibits automobile ownership because they have speed limits.
