My solution to being able to protect oneself in public here is to carry a walking staff when out in isolated area's. No law against that. And wanting a sturdy staff, this one has a 1/2" brass rod running through it and a metal trip to aid in making sure it doesn't slip. I would recommend a internet search for the effective use of the quarterstaff. More that adequate for self defense against anything but a firearm at ranges beyond 5'. Inside that range it is equally as deadly as a shotgun.
For defense in more populated area, a pocket knife with a 4" blade and Spetznas knife techniques by Vadim Starof.
