Sam, the breakwater is set on a 'finger' of a lava from the Pana'ewa lava flow (created most of the industrial area of Hilo, plus Liliokalani Gardens & Richardsons ~ 700 AD) off of the lava finger, the depths increase at the bend to over 140' fairly close to the breakwater. The Pana'ewa flow has a unique characteristic of having 'young' flow green olivine and old flow white feldspar. Link for HVO info on the Pana'ewa flow:
