Travelling with pets between islands
#3
If the pet with the carrier weighs less than 15 pounds, you can take it as a carry-on. The pet and carrier must fit under the seat. It will in place of your carry-on but you are still allowed a personal item like a purse or backpack. We have a little 6 pound dog (I'm not sure if that even qualifies as a dog) and he's gone on at least a dozen flights back and forth from the Big Island to Oahu. With Hawaiian Airlines, they tell you to make your reservations and then call them with your confirmation code to see if there's room on the flight. They limit each plane to carry no more than three animals at a time. The irritating thing is that if the plane is full (I've never had this happen though) then you have to pay to change your reservation. I think if you were to argue with them about it you could get away with it, but I always found this to be rather idiotic. I tried reserving a spot on the flight before booking and they told me I couldn't do it. Go/Mokulele has similar rules but they seem to be a little more lax. Oh, by the way, there is no charge for the pet.
