New fee when you visit Maku'u Farmers market
#91
Kalakoa say;
"Farmers' markets in "private" subdivsions would be within walking/bicycle (and quad, for that matter) distance for many people ... so of course they were all shut down, because to do otherwise would not be "fair" to SPACE, of course."

Forgive me, I'm not sure what you mean? There's a Market in HOVE Ranchos, Space in Seaview, Ali'i drive in Kona, Keauhoe in Kona, Volcano (I think), and Hawaiian Acres (pending upon a complaint from a disgruntled neighbor- but it will be approved). Who was shut down?

Markets within walking distance would be great, but selection of products will always be more limited.

Clearly, this is what I chose when I bought that cheap land infested with coqui and fire ants on the bad road without high-speed internet or grid power under the helicopter flight path. Nearby markets were one of the few amenities; "Market at The Mill" is hardly a replacement for the local color once found at Fern Acres and Hawaiian Acres; everything else is an hour or more round-trip drive.

I guess it's just a matter of building a greenhouse, aquaponics system, and chicken coop; that way I'll have eggs and vegetables until someone complains and County shuts it all down because the water tank is six inches into the setback. It would be only fair.

Not sure if I am right about this, but didn't Maku'u Market open after the original Pahoa flea market closed. I think there were questions of who owned the Pahoa property and liability. I do remember how upset everyone was about the closure.
When Maku'u first open, I remember thinking they are crazy if they think this is going to work, to far away from Pahoa, no-one is going to come! Well I was proven wrong, look at it now[Big Grin]

Article in Pacific Business News about future plans of the market,

The Maku'u Farmers Association is non-profit, look at what they have accomplished so far, if it wasn't for this organization there would be no Maku'u Farmers Market!
We have had 12 years free parking, support the parking fee and any other fees they feel is necessary to complete their vision of the community center, which will benefit all of us.

Snorkle the market at hawaiian acres has been shut down for serveral months because a property owner didn't like it .She went to the county and then county told Hawaiian acres farmers market they had to have a permit to keep it open.They are trying to get a permit but has been tied up by the person who doesn't want it open. It is a shame it was free to the vendors who where just local acres people trying make a few bucks.It was a great little market.
