terracore - We don't have a death rate for the coronavirus ... guesses range from 4-15%
So I have to ask generally - if we assume a similar exponential progression seen so far, in about 2 weeks there will be over 1 million confirmed cases and several thousand fatalities. How is this going to change your day-to-day life? If your living situation does not already include extended food, water, energy, and security resources currently, is anyone taking any steps to change this? I'm just trying to understand if people are contemplating Umbrella Corp/Racoon City type scenarios, what are they doing in the coming days?
On a side note, both Pandemic and Train to Busan are on Netflix currently. Coincidence? Almost certainly, but perhaps there is more to it?

"Since first reported, the Wuhan virus has spread far more rapidly on social media than in the real world."
Since social media became aware of this a week ago, the virus has exceeded the total number affected during the entire SARS outbreak.
That's 9 months worth- in a week:

There are plenty of "Doomsday Preppers" type programs also on Netflix or the like. It's a lifestyle, not a living situation. Most people will fall into two categories from this virus- majority will do nothing, the others will make token preparations like trying to find face masks to buy or gassing up their cars. Or maybe buy a case of bottled water because that's what they see people doing on TV.

I would quibble slightly with the implied meaning here. You don't have to kill, clean, and cook your meat over an open fire started by hand every day to know how to do so as needed. That said, you never really know if all your preparations can be fully depended on until you try. Always good to have options even if you don't need them 99.994% of the time. (In over 15,000 days, I've never once had to rely only on my skills and the natural environment to survive, even when intentionally separating oneself from civilization in the back country).
Overall, I was just curious as to whether all this hang-wringing over Wuhan was just indulging in apocalypse porn or actually prompting some tangible action, even if that's just increased hand-washing.

I need to admit I’m being selfish in my research and due diligence on ncov 2019. I use a fair amount of my early hours playing with stocks. I watch the global markets, shipping, containers, quantity, destinations, increases, decreases in shipping, commodities ect.
China of course is a global powerhouse. They ship. There is major discussion on the “shelf life” of ncov. Will this halt production? Shipping? Costs of sterilization, it goes so deep. Humidity, temperatures, who really knows the truth as of right now? Walmart, target, so much Chinese made goods. Just one aspect of the economic side of this.
They are still arguing incubation, transmission human to human. Right now, I’m not overly concerned with coming in contact with it. I am watching the money trail and communicating with other investors. Fun couple weeks ahead.

I won’t give the names or ticker symbols, but a couple “drug” companies are loving the momentum right now. This is typical when a new scare comes out. For those that don’t know, anytime sars, Zika or something else pops up and has people scrambling, give a quick look to the pharma stocks. Usually a nice 1-3 week window of nice gains.

Sure death despair and panic drive the market. The economic toll to china may pull the global market down. Will be interesting to watch but I dont think it will be much fun.

I don't disagree with you. What I meant was more like, if one is completely lacking in specific knowledge, skills, abilities, and the "stuff" to use them, and suddenly becomes aware that TSHTF in a week or whatever, it's too late. The best they can hope for is to get to the stores before everybody else. I was on Maui after Lane (or whatever the storm was called) caused their barge to be a few days late and ALL the fresh food/dairy section at Safeway had bare shelves and there were big empty spaces in the regular shelves. This wasn't even panic buying, it was mostly just because we live in a "just in time" economy and strong winds delayed the barges.
