Council to consider regulating vacation rentals

The vast "private" subdivisions were zoned Ag in order to avoid infrastructure that would have been required for the development of housing. The fact that ag-zoned lands can be used for productive ag only becomes relevant if the particular land is also designated "important". In other cases the "need" to "protect our local ag" is used as an argument against development. (Unless there's rail through it, then "transit-oriented developent" becomes the new most important thing.)

It's all about protecting the Hotel's kuleana. They have the Lobby and they have they have the money, all the the rest is waha to cover the real agenda; keep the money concentrated, with them.
The greatest number of "Ag" parcels in the State are on land that was available for subdivision because that land was unfit for agriculture, otherwise the sugar planters would have had it already. The other hard-rock land went to Hawaiian Homes.

I doubt an ag lot air B and B will reduce their growing footprint much, if any, to accommodate visitors. A small cabin or room in a house doesn't make much of an impact. Some farms would be a lot more fun to stay at than a place in a residential area, at least for me.

If we would require all AirBnBs on property zoned AG to be producing farms, then I'd be all for that.

Are houses on AG property required to be producing farms? Well then.

Vacation rentals would be a good fit. Milk that tourist.

I work on a 6 acre macadamia orchard that sometimes does vacation rentals. As any farmer can tell you, no one really gets rich farming (unless you're Richard Ha). When I first started working here the orchard had been abandoned for years and was covered in cane grass and stink miele. Its been a real labor of love to rehabilitate the orchard, and very expensive. The money get get from harvesting the nuts doesn't even come close to how much has been invested in this land. The vacation rentals definitely help offset the expense. Plus, tourists get to see a real working macadamia farm in rural Hawaii. That's not something that resorts can offer.
