The Civil Beat Community Voice article was co-authored by 10 council members including Valerie Poindexter.
So a chequered past of one individual taints this article so it can so easily be dismissed.
Elle Cochran regardless of her past is serving her 4th term as West Maui Councilwoman and has filed papers to enter the race for Maui's next Mayor.

Despite the constant attacks of Hawaii Free Press and their following, it does not seem to have changed the mind of Elle's supporters.

Yes.
When she follows the rules of society she has proven she's not a danger to those at the Lahaina Cannery Mall (robbing tourists with a handgun), but an effective advocate for the residents of West Maui. So much so that they have elected her repeatedly.
This could be compared to the way in which pesticides are used. Perhaps dangerous when not diluted properly or applied appropriately, but when following label directions, many, even most pesticides pose little danger.

rainyjim - do you know anything about her qualifications to speak on pesticide use or regulation in Hawaii - or anything about her past - maybe her past experiences in armed robbery? These are the people who claim to be ‘protecting you’.
Oddly ad hominum with a hint of appealing to authority... was there actually something wrong with the facts of the letter or just the messenger's past? (much of which text was in a form letter than showed up in the public commentary - which was almost universally supportive of the bill it seemed as long as it added back in the public notice provisions.)
Given all the versions revisions, it will be interesting where this bill settles ultimately. My guess is it will just be the studies that make it through and all the notice, tracking, and reporting requirements will be cut (because studies = yeah!, real work=boo!)

I read this morning in a Star Advertiser editorial that Hawaii government agencies use more pesticides than all of the farmers, ranchers, vegetable and fruit growers combined.
If government passes a bill to control private businesses, the call to control government spraying will be next.

Do you honestly believe the average person is using pesticides appropriately? As for following label directions forget it, just make the proportions stronger it will kill everything at one time, save money. save time.
