Carey, do you mean that your leach field is only buried 5" below ground? If so, this does not appear to be correct. Leach fields here are much smaller than what you may be used to. I can't remember the exact figures but about 30-40 of corrugated pipe sounds about right. But it should be a couple feet below ground level.

We do not have septic, this was a neighbors lot that we saw, and it did not seem to be a "mounded leach field" but more like a shallower trendh with cinder overlay...
That said, we were merely watching the construction while dog walking, so there may have been more of an overlay, but the original trench was not that deep (about a foot) and the corrugated drain & overfill was added, with no visible mound, so we guessed about 5" overfill.

The Health Department sounds like a good place to start, but I was hoping for some specific contact info since the county and state websites are a litle tough to navigate. My question regarding the required setbacks still standa by the way. Thanks again for the reedback.
Since your house is new, not only can you get the card with the dimensions/location of your waste water system, you can see who the engineer is and possible get the original plot plan used. Building dept may even still have your prints on file which will show the proposed location of the wastewater system. I would ask them - make a copy - and keep them in case you have other questions on your home (but at only 2 yrs old you may have got a copy when you purchased it).
