what is the best internet option in Orchidland?
#11
Orchidland is no worse than Fern Forest, better probably... Frustrating, I know!! The solution I came up with was to use the cell phone as the wifi port, and get an antenna/signal booster mounted on the house. I went with Wilson, it was a $300 unit from Cellular Enhancements near KTA in Hilo. You could probably find one cheaper online. It's somewhat expensive monthly ($49.99 through ATT), but it's very reliable now. Satellite costs more for the install, the dish and the monthly, and still only give you 5G normally. It isn't as reliable either. It slows way down there's a storm, or if you go over a certain amount of data usage in a day.

This isn't any recommendation and have no experience with this satellite service but it was in a tribune article about a federal grant providing internet access to lower income families and one of the stories is about a woman taking online classes out in Kalapana. Don't know what the installation cost is but the monthly rate for decent, not great, bandwidth is reasonable. If you click on the Dealers, there are lots of local dealers.

Any info on what the d/l speed is? How much for extra bandwidth? With rural DSL we were using 2 gigs an hour.
