I had the pleasure of playing classical, (very soft, virtuoso music), guitar at Kaleos, one night. Loved it and received many laudatory comments from customers.
We love Kaleos and eat there often. Great place.

It's my sincere hope we can make it there one evening when you're playing, Lee.

I, too, have had problems with entertainers blasting their music, but it's not unique to Kaleos. Best suggestion is the 9PM or later for "club" entertainment. Too many musicians seem to think the customers came just to hear them at any hour. Sitting in the outer (porch?) area means car lights/noise; one time I swear a departing customer was going to come right through the restaurant.....turning is a bit tight out there. Good food, fair service and noisy sums it up for me.

I agree about Maggie...she's amazing and so sorry I didn't get to hear her while she was there. It would be to go listen however, and not have a meaningful conversation over dinner...both of those things just can't happen at that venue. I do love Kaleo's though...their food is always yummy. I've never had a bad meal there.

I always refused to sit in the main room at Kaleo's but I had a friend who preferred it and so was in the main room several times. We went one night for another friend's birthday and I couldn't hear anything at all that anyone said. We had to shout. So, I said never again (in the evening). I like music. And I like dining with friends. I do not really like them together unless the music is really soft. The idea of dining with friends is to talk with them. At Luquin's once, I saw a ukulele player. I think he had an amp but it was turned very, very low. At Kaleo's, they need to make sure the music is very low if they persist in having it at all. The acoustics in the room make sound bounce around in unpleasant ways. That's why I like the little room off the entrance. I like listening to the crunch of car wheels in the gravel parking lot, and rain on the tin roof. In that room, you can hear the music, off in the distance, but can still converse.
I would unplug the instruments and feature instruments other than band instruments, such as brassy sax for heaven' sake. Such instruments interfere with my sense of place. Some classical guitar, or other acoustic or lightly amped music would be nice. Cafe Pesto also has very bad, train-station-style acoustics. In the less and less likely event I get a date, I think I would take them to Hilo Bay Cafe (or maybe I will get taken there -- it could happen!...I wonder what that is even like). I don't like the New Yorky vibe at HBC. But the food is great, the cocktails are prepared with care, and you can actually talk to one another. Very intimate.
I have to say, though, the best meal I've had on island was at a friend's house (mahalo nui!). When the food is really good, really fresh and healthy and prepared with aloha and you can hear each other it is makes a better memory than dining in a disenchanted tiki room, trapped with a sax blaring music to get waterboarded by.

The sound in the HBC can be good. Played there once, too!
It depends on the instrumentation and sound system being used.

I guess you should check who's playing. If Bruddah Walter is on we ask to sit a close as possible. He plays at a level that you can still talk and hear each other, not that I want to talk during many of his songs. If it was a loud band, that's something else. And we've had nothing but great food. As a matter of fact, Pahoa has great places to eat, our current fave is the tofu sandwich at Pho Cafe, and then both Thai places are good, Sirius is good, heck, I'm getting the munchies just thinking about heading up the road. And to Kaleo's, get Lee to play!

Oh and PVC is really LOUD, so old married couples don't have to worry about maintaining a conversation when dining Vietnamese!
