It's very dangerous but you know how it works. A kid is going to be injured by a boat before anything is ever done.
I saw a big local boy slip on the ramp once and break his neck. EMS hauled him away. That ramp is very slippery. Everyone should clear out when a boat is being launched or brought in. But they don't.
One Thing I can always be sure of is that things will never go as expected.

Slip on ramp is like slip on rocks ... Or wet floor for that matter.
I think the kid/person that gets injured will be one of my above wise asses ... And its not gonna be by a prop. aloha, pog

Another close call this morning. A boat came in pretty fast with a bunch of kids sqimming by the ramp. Sooner or later we are going to have a tragedy...
Nothing left to do but

I too have favored and suggested the idea of a ramp cut into one of the lava flows, only to be told that it would take too long. I suppose that is the price of working in/with the system and being silly enough to suggest something progressive.
I highly recommend that the concerned members of the public contact the DLNR's Division of Boating and Ocean Recreation (DOBOR) with your recommendations and suggestions. Also let your elected officials know that you want to see something like this, and ask them to contact DOBOR as well. A large portion of the lava between Pohoiki and WaiOpae belongs to KSBE, maybe they would be open to a land swap with the State for this purpose.... |
