FWIW,
My vet told me yesterday that ticks here only like dogs, so cat owners don't have to worry... She didn't say if the ticks like people, though.

Yes, ticks are generally a dry weather crowd. Have had dogs get them in Honolulu and Kauai, but not here in Hilo. Of particular note is to inspect your dogs, new arrivals from the mainland, who get quarantined at Halawa. The staff will powder the pets during their stay, but you still need to inspect and remove the few stubborn stragglers. At least that was my experience with our dog. I was told the ticks live in the trees there.

when dog and i lived 'up canyon' dry 15 inches a year - lots of deer
tics would come out at the first sign of dew on the vegetation. The old timers believed the deer passing through the leaves deposited tic eggs on the brush all summer long, the eggs hatching at the first wet dew
it made sense and I was able to predict when the dog would have pick them up - both dog and I are all over the brush out here - have yet to pick one up
I used to soak the tics in vodka to get them to let go (long story) --- when ever I would pour a drink for guests the dog would bolt - i did get some looks.......

Five or six years ago my dogs here in upper HPP were suddenly covered in ticks, in their ears, between their toes, everywhere. Dr. Grune, the vet on 28th, had tick collars that took care of the problem in just a few days. Haven't seen a tick since and only used the collars that one time. Don't remember what the weather was back then, didn't connect that with the infestation.
I am so much more like I am today than I ever was before!
I don't know how I got over the hill without getting to the top.

I think deer ticks are the ones that carry Lyme disease. I grew up on the Wyoming/Montana border and have a friend who contracted Lyme disease via deer tick and it was not pretty. I am showing my ignorance about my new home but are there deer onthe Big Island?

You'll have to get used to that here. Lots of loonies.
