Incident Today in Paradise Park
#11
The problem is obviously a police budget shortfall caused by the "property tax cheaters".

So are the helicopters in HPP looking for someone or are they hovering for more "traditional" reasons?

There's nothing going on in HPP except rumors.
It is one of the safest subdivisions in Puna, thanks partly to our Neighborhood Watch.

There was a break in.........end of Paradise Dr. Neighbors heard someone in the house....and went to investigate . They saw a broken window and called the police. It appeared that the man had been sleeping there for a while. Unfortunately this is not the only incident of trespass and occupation of a home here on Kaloli. It is the second in a few short months......there would be 3 if not for the swift action of a few neighbors. Things are changing. Our good friends off Makuu stopped a break in less than a month ago and it was not that long ago that Pork and Beans were the weapon of choice. I'm grateful for the Excellent coconut wireless out here.

It is a shame that our Police Department - and I basically mean county management level- cannot be proactive on these property crimes. Reactive is old school and lazy. It's like chasing a cow after it gets out of the fence. A smart police department would be more progressive.

The Police really can't do much without locating the owner first, as it is the owner who must substantiate whether the occupant have legal right or not. This new incident involved out of town owners.....luckily, their neighbors had contact info. This was also the case for our friends off Makuu .
The other two out here involved foreclosure property. It is not difficult to provide bogus information to HELCO and get the power turned on . The current solution in these situations would be for the neighbors to know who the legal owner are .......and start a campaign of telephoning and writing the owner of record before THE POWER being TURNED ON. A meaningful Solution would be for HELCO to REQUIRE OWNER OF RECORD ACKNOWLEDGEMENT prior to power being turned on . Until this changes, there is a small group of friends and neighbors in my neighborhood willing to support each other with this effort......aside from official neighborhood watch groups that don't always pass on pertinent information.

Where there's a will, there's a way.

No leadership at the HPD is the problem. They get paid no matter what happens.
