how awesome of you to take the time to share your knowledge, Bluesboy!!

For any of you traveling to Oahu or having visitors also traveling to Oahu, there is one other suggestion. A dear sweet Hawaiian, George Kalilikane, teaches paddle boarding at one of my most favorite places, Pokai Bay, Waianae coast. Google his name, you can watch part of his utube and see what he has put together..... or contact him via his Facebook page. George is a great guy, the bay is gentle and the sunsets are heavenly!

perfect tips, Blueboy.

One little thing I might recommend - get her a pair of those little neoprene water boot-socks (what are they called??) that people wear to walk on slippery (limu-covered) rocks. The kind you see people wear when they are picking opi'i. They might be kinda dorky but those rocks at Honolii are so tough to walk out on, and she'll be standing beside her board a lot as a beginner. Sure, you don't see a lot of people there wearing them (because they hop right on their boards and paddle out), but it will make it so much more comfortable for her as a learner, not to mention that it will give her a greater sense of control when trying to walk back out with her board through breaking surf. Dealing with pain/discomfort/fear during your first few sessions can very quickly kill the stoke - don't let that happen to her!

Bluesboy, Thank you, I have started to understand this more, Have called a couple of shops for their recommendation for instructors & have a couple of names & am looking at boards - we may get one but still not positive on what to look for & what not to look for (except that getting a good, wide, 7ish footer used board is better that a new board, as dings & stuff will happen), have figured out there are fins that really flexible for beginners, have not totally figured out all of terms used for the different boards, shapes & fin types.

As far as footwear, can you wear those scrubbing pad bottom tabis while surfing, or are watershoes useful, or should the be the more grippy rubber bottom water boots? or am I now worrying about something that will all work out?

Richardson's would be a good place there's not a lot of current on the inside. Perfect little white water with a pretty good push. And there will be babies there to build confidence. Honolii is COLD from the river and lots of current.

One Thing I can always be sure of is that things will never go as expected.
