Any book clubs in the area?

I am so behind the times! It never occurred to me that they might have gone on-line these days. I'm still looking and will ask around.

If anyone here would want to do a reading group on "the hard stuff" -- I would love that.

By that I mean the books that are daunting but rewarding, the kind where you only read a chapter at most per meeting. I belonged to a couple on the mainland; it takes a group to read a book full of allusions and make it fun.

Likewise, if anyone wanted to do "old" literature or "newer" stuff like Shakespeare. ;-)
I don't have much hope of that, but I miss it. When I moved here, I had been teaching Chaucer in Middle English, Faerie Queane, Paradise Lost. Old Irish mythology or Classics, anyone? Homer? Virgil? (not in the original language). Joyce? Virginia Woolf?

Currently getting my pseudo-medieval fix from rereading Song of Ice and Fire.
There's a great website called Tower of the Hand if anyone else is an addict.

I would be interested in this, because I like to read- and this would force me to read stuff I might not normally be reading. Good for the mind. Let me know of any ideas of where to meet. Do you live north or south of Hilo?

If you are still interested, call me at 965-9285 and I'll give you the info. As far as I know, this group welcomes new people and that is according to my friend who is part of the club.

Julie, you may also want to check out http://www.goodreads.com. I found a lot of good books and some great book discussion on this site.

Hi Julie,
sorry I didn't reply to you yesterday, was not on computer. I live north of Hilo, and I can meet in Hilo, if we got a group together of at least 5 or 6 that wanted to discuss serious literature.

As you said, challenging the brain is good!

I like in person book clubs, because it's a different, more informal process where people trade back and forth in real time and things click in a whole other way than an online discussion.

Kathy H, Julie

I would be interested in joining a book club. I was part of one in Wisconsin and meet 3 great people who became friends as a result of our reading.

Kathy, the first book we read was Ulysses, James, Joyce---took us a year ( one chapter a month!!), would never have finished this book otherwise. We then moved on to Philosophy; 16th century England ( Hilary Mantel, Wolf Hall, Bring up the Bodies); Russian --- there is so much to read. Julie, in case you are thinking " I'm not interested in reading ANY of this" we also read less serious, light stuff. That's the beauty of a book club, it can be anything the participants want it to be.

That's pretty funny, because when I was a kid I absolutely LOVED James Joyce! But now, I must admit, I am usually too exhausted from my kids to read things other than the newspaper or Danielle Steele romances. Anyhow, yes, I'm interested in starting a club. The main problem to solve is "where to meet". My house is in the middle of being renovated, I have little furniture- and I have an autistic 7 yr old running around most of the time. Not conducive to adult conversation! Try and email me if you any ideas. What about Starbucks or some place like that? Maybe some place on the UH campus? I think there's a meeting room at the Library as well.
