Remember, it was a previous Pahoa "leadership" that determined what Pahoa needed the most, above anything and everything else, was a giant county park (to be the biggest county recreational park) paid for with the county taking on over $50 million in debt to finish it. This came out of the "downtown" Pahoa association, not realizing Pahoa is a village, not a town and doesn't have a "downtown". Oh what damage transplants can achieve.

Apparently you were not here when the park land was acquired.

Wow the price tag is high for a park. Sounds very spacious with a variety of options or activities for everyone. I can see bringing my little ones there in the morning before we go for a swim at the pool. The covered courts with lights would get plenty use by my older boys and I in the evenings as well. Does anyone know if pets will be welcomed or ignored?. Could we have an area to hit golf balls, or fly remote controlled drones or kites?. Next to Pahoa finally getting a football team this year?, this is the best news i have heard in Puna in some time now. Beats getting another bar or burger king.

Imagine how far that amount of money could go towards expanding 130 into 4 full time lanes (and yes, I know this is a totally different source of funds and can't go to highways). What a total waste of money. I hope those fields are gold plated or something.

Funny -- if the park is popular, two lanes will be inadequate.
No worries, though; with the 5-year roundabout project, nobody will be able to reach the park in the first place.

Graham Ellis and the Village Green Society constructed a playground for their community for several hundred dollars that would have cost the county around $60,000.
Maybe the county would be better off donating the property to the Village Green society and letting them do a park without spending public funds.

Snorkle,
That actually may be a good suggestion.

The Extra Puka in Da Head Gang would protest calling it special interest and bringing in too much traffic. Besides, it might be used for geothermal.

Did anyone notice how far from the keiki playground and the ball fields they put the bathrooms. So some mom who has a bunch of kids with her when one needs to pee is going to have to decide between: rounding up ALL her kids and going to the bathroom, or sending one kid alone, or leaving the other kids at the playground while she takes one to the bathroom. None are good choices.
If they were going to put in only one bathroom they should have put it where parents could watch the doors from the playground.
