Uncle Robert's is in Kalapana (the awa bar next to Verna's). Usually the luau is the third Saturday of the month. Stop by and talk story with them to get all the scoops.

Thanks, John! I knew about the awa bar (didn't remember the name right off), but didn't know about the monthly lu`au. I'll put it on the "to check out" list for our next visit.
We've been looking for a less commercial, less crowded, maybe less expensive, and hopefully a bit more friendly and personal than the "soak the tourists" lu`aus thrown by the resorts and others.

1) Coming home from work and finding fresh fruits & vegetables at the door that friends brought over.
2)Seeing Mauna Kea & Mauna Loa on a clear day.

1) Coming across a rare critter while snorkeling or diving.
2) Never needing to dress up (Ever Even For Business Meetings).
3) Watching the Amakihi take a bath in the birdbath outside my dining room window.
4) Driving around in an old beat up Trooper and feeling like I fit in.
5) Never having to endure cold weather.
6) Hiking out to the lava flow to poke sticks into the lava.
I really like many of the things others have mentioned too especially the avocados in my yard and local kids calling me Uncle. Very cool!!
By the way I like this thread. Very positive!! Let's have more like it.

1. Letting the water and black sand swirl around my toes at the beach
2. Enjoying my morning coffee and papaya on the covered lanai where we stayed in Leilani, even if it was raining.
3. The open air massage at Maku'u Market
4. Being able to smile at random people and have them smile back at you on the street.
5. Getting to go outside every single day of the year without a jacket or closed toed shoes.

1) Talking to friendly people at
(a) the Maku'u Market (eating stuff too).
(b) the Keaau farmers market and buying fruits and veggies for cheap.
2) Sitting on the lanai at night smoking a cigar and drinking a Bourbon and watching the clouds and listening to the light rain showers.
3) Hiking anywhere.
4) Feeling the morning breeze.
5) Dreaming of telling my boss where to go and moving to Puna on one of my lots (Pele may decide).

1. Arriving at Hilo airport smelling, feeling and breathing the air and knowing I've arrived at home and never wanting to leave!
2. Lurking on the bluffs above Kehena and longing to be in the surf, but afraid of the climb down not up!
3. Meeting the best of people - Punatics at a Punaweb party, and meeting Ray at Dottie's, and David at Fuku-Bonsai and feeling we have known them forever!
4. Going to Volcano buying large pieces of Art at the Volcano Art and Garden Center and leaving it with a friend awaiting my permanent arrival!
5. Volcano grocery buying myself and friends bouquets of flowers.
6. Beach towels all colors Longs (unfortunately they aren't made in Hawaii.
7. Malasadas, creme filled and Korean BBQ chicken at Tex's.
8. Hilo Farmers market 2 door up bakery with pineapple cakes.
9. Portuguese bean soup anywhere on island, but especially at Koffee Kafe in Mt. View next to Dan De Luz's wood shop, visiting and with the wood artists after dinner.
10. Maku'u market people, places, music and things all in one fun spot!

It makes me feel wonderful that 99% of the responses have to do with nature, friendship, sharing and life in general on this side of the Big Island, ya’ gotta’ love it.
If you think health care is expensive now, wait until you see what it cost when it’s free...now here come the taxes.....
