It use to be a Journalist was someone like H. L. Mencken, Edward R. Murrow, or Bob Woodward, but now it's anyone who can string a bunch of words together, and gets
a name tag printed up:

. . I ARE A JOURNALIST !

Haha, that was awesome! Oops. If anything, these online bloggers and webzines are more yellow journalism than anything else (believe it was called yellow journalism because it was printed on cheap paper that quickly turned yellow). There was once a time that the journalism media *reported* the news, not *make* the news. There also used to be fact and grammatical checking. Now, it is just whatever whoever wants to blow out their rear end that day.

I looked up yellow journalism and I had no idea this is how it got its name:

Rob says;
"Alan may have already quietly left BIC. His last by-line was Aug. 28th."

I just saw Alan's byline yesterday(Sep6), so we all must know he's still writing and we all appreciate the service he and Tiffany provide.[Wink]

edit;
adjusted time/space continuum.

Today is September 7th (not yesterday) and I could only find 1 bylined story from TEH on the 2nd, and an attributed commentary piece, also by TEH from the 4th. Everything else from Aug. 31 is unattributed, but was posted by TEH.

I don't know what, if anything , this means. Maybe Alan is working on a long article to the exclusion of other writing, or maybe he is on vacation, or maybe BIC is again a 1 woman show, but I see nothing from Alan after August..

I see Alan posted an HVO update yesterday. He did not write that; it is written by HVO--but that shows he was there.

I cannot see anything from him editorially since the entry on limiting trolls on the 28th that ironically turned into a big troll fight in the comments.

Big Island Chronicle is not a service. It's a business, paid for by advertising, used as one person's soapbox with guest soapbox pieces from the approved list. It does not represent a cross section of Puna or the Big Island. It has a fair amount of announcements for events and news releases that can also be found in other island publications.

There was a time when it had decent discussions, but you will no longer see a diverse group of contributors.

The pages load VERY slowly these days on my computer, and I have high speed internet. I can't imagine with slow download speed.

It's too bad the HIJ couldn't last. There's been nothing in its league since.

Sorry; I got the date wrong, and corrected it.

I've noticed that sometimes there's no byline unless the story is opened.(It's not always on the front page).

Whether the BIC is a service or not is dependent on the point of view of the reader. It has been, and will remain, a service to many of us for stories and comments about local subjects outside of the mainstream press.

I'm surprised that some feel that a business cannot be considered a service. Leo's rubbish Hauling is business and a service; (to those who use it).

I provide support to some of (not all- my choice) the advertisers who support the blog.

A "service business" is a common concept and common in practice everywhere. I think that the source of possible confusion lies with Tiffany herself referring, on a number of occasions, to BIC as a "community service". That is different.

I view Punaweb as a community service and on that basis I offer free advertising to local residents and have no scheduled source of income (advertising). I have accepted donations and am grateful for them as they occur.

Tiffany accepts donations on BIC also... but she also has a scheduled advertising program which, by my estimation, may bring in a thousand dollars or more a month. On that basis I think her use of the term "community service" may be misleading.
Assume the best and ask questions.

Lady,You got kicked off of Tiffany's site because you went into some kind of crazy rant about who killed Bo and Brittany ! Because of that you now have this vendetta going on !!

It was good when you could use her site as your soapbox

Rob explains what I meant well. Obviously we were not talking about a service business, as it is not that. Community service is what I believed you meant when you raised the term, but maybe not?

You are mistaken. I don't use it. I have been checking it to see if it did any useful coverage of the election issues, but I did not find it helpful. I thought the questionnaire project was lame.

I have checked it for interesting discussions, but haven't found them, other than a bit of entertainment from trainwreck conversations like the one on banning trolls. BIC used to have them, but it's devolved into "people who support Tiffany whatever she does" as most of the commenters. Any others get dumped on.

Why are we discussing BIC? Because TEH is running for County Council, owns and controls BIC, pretended to hand over the reins during her campaign so she could not be accused of using her publishing outlet to put down her opponents -- but despite her bringing on Alan, BIC has not covered the complaint and investigation as news. That's why.
