Let's Move to Hell!

Irukandji jellyfish, can't see them. They'll kill you.
Just one of aussie's little nastys.
I'll take my chances with the lava.
Buy north of Ainaloa.
One Thing I can always be sure of is that things will never go as expected.

We had no idea it rained so much in hell, we were mostly prepared for fire and brimstone.

I'd be looking for anywhere between Hilo and Waimea on the Hamaukua coast, Honomu near Akaka Falls is really nice. I would not advise anyone to buy in Hawaiian Shores right now.

Puna's beautiful, but a big attraction is the price and some people are willing to take a chance with the additional lava risk to be able to live mortgage free, especially during retirement, is huge consideration depending on your nest egg.

Come spend some time here first, rent don't buy first. Rents may be going down... a lot.

The way I explain the whole lava issue is this: There is a small, walled city. A scout looks out over its crenelated walls and sees a warrior at the gates. The warrior has a flamethrower that can surmount the walls. Panic ensues, but the warrior just sits there. Calm returns. And then the people of the city take another look over the wall and out into the plains beyond. And in the distance they see an army of warriors a quarter mile wide, all with flamethrowers in tow. They are advancing very slowly.

I might suggest picking a retirement locale at your leisure. Decide in haste, repent at your leisure, preferably by the ocean with a pool. Puna is not on fire by the way. It's actually kind of soggy today. This girl is on fire. But not Puna. Puna is not hell, either. Even on my darkest days here, I found so many beautiful moments that they have all added up to a gripping, romantic, and exotic adventure that was completely unexpected. Oh wait. Maybe that's just me. Maybe I'm gripping, romantic and exotic. I dunno. Anyway, the vibe is unique. Kilauea is part of that. And now we see that is not just something you see in sputtering neon on the side of a run down liquor store, a t-shirt, on a comical game that's fun for the whole family, or on the logo for an Asian-tinged supermarket.

"We have found the perfect house at a great price...in Hawaiian Shores"

Is that a great price in general or a great price for Hawaiian Shores?
Do it - if you can get fire insurance.

Hell always gets such a bad rap. But I assure you based on my visit it isn't the worst town in Michigan.

There's still a lot of Puna district North of Ainaloa and West of Kea'au. I wouldn't buy in Shores right now. The renting advice, however, is very good. Could be quite the adventure if you are freshly retired and renting near the projected lava flow.

Contrary to popular belief, hell isn't hot. Hell is wet, cold, gloomy, miserable rain, day after day after day. That is northern Oregon. It is so miserable, people travel there to commit suicide as a way to escape. There have been about 4 or 5 suicides on the Oregon coast just in the past few weeks, people jumping off bridges, overdosing on logging roads, etc. Recently, a mother traveled to the coast to drown her two year old in a motel bathtub. So, yes, move to hell, go back to the mainland. As for Australia, look up snakes, spiders, paralysis ticks, or just "Australia poison" to see the entire list plus they have been having huge droughts, flooding and fires. There are nicer places on Hawaii island than Puna, but there is an entry fee. It is much better to be in an area where eruption, bad roads, mentally disturbed people, and wrecked real estate market aren't always on your mind.

I bought my place in Shores and closed escrow on June 20, 2014. Yup, that's right. One week before the current flow started. Because I've got great timing that way. [xx(]
