Highway 130 new lane already flooding...

When I drove through Monday, people were merging at the old merge as well as the new merge, so it seemed to cause more of a backup than usual. Once a majority of drivers realize the new shoulder lane is open from 3-6 pm, it should be back to normal.

When I went through today both lanes were totally backed up from the Humane society to Shower, we just sat for 10 to 20 minutes at a time, then inched forward, then stopped again, both lanes. Right after the pre Shower merge it looked like things opened up, not that many of us were turning at Shower.

I don't know the exact plans, but I'm hoping the merge will, at the very least, be at Shower. I'm hopeful this will be the case as they have construction going on close to that point and cones in the Pahoa-direction shoulder up to Shower. That way those that normally turn into HPP at Kaloli, Paradise and perhaps even Makuu, will use Shower and reduce the merging traffic. More traffic through Shower unfortunately, but at least you'd hope most of that traffic would be due to HPP residents.

That's what I thought when I saw the grade facing away from the drain track,I thought "hmmm of course backwards, how else would they do it here!"lol

The piss poor signage and the lane striping done by blind men are contributing to the double merge. Give a few weeks and a few more fender benders and we should all be on track. Until they change it up again that is!

It worked really well for a couple of years.
That's when I decided it would be a bad thing to move here before I retired !

It has only just begun and it is going to get much much worse before it gets better.

Does anyone understand it's because we refuse to have a DOT standard highway built. The money used to be out there to build roads but they would have overpasses,on ramps, etc. That is a no go here and I'm OK with that.

I find it kind of baffling that most of the people who complain live in HPP.You could do a lot to alleviate the problem by paving enough cross streets to allow Shower to be used by more people. There is going to be a traffic light there anyway, you might as well get off of 130 and give the people downstream a chance to get home!!

You are really clueless about the situation.

Most of the cross streets from the highway to Shower are already paved, and heavily used by Ainaloa and Orchidland residents headed to Hilo in the morning to avoid the highway congestion. But the Puna bound congestion is still all before Shower, not after, so the merge is the issue, not the HPP residents.

I believe you are clueless.Shower needs to be widened to a 4 lane road and everyone living in HPP needs to get the hell off of the highway !

The County need to use immanent domain and make Railroad into a meandering 2 lane road with bike and jogging lanes. It will never happen because most of our tax money goes to pay salaries.

And your neighborhood needs to put in a full parking lot for visitors to the marine reserve that belongs to all of us and quit pooping in the tidepools through your cesspools, but that isn't going to happen either.

Thank you, Obie, much appreciated. Getting a little fed up with the inter sub-division bickering derailing threads. There are enough other threads for that!
