In my opinion...I don't think Pahoa will be receiving any money for infrastructural improvements in the near future with the lava flow looming above the town. And that includes the new mall that Bryson was working on. I can understand the businesses that left wanting to come back into the buildings that they vacated...but any new construction at this point is just too risky!

I think the hardest part of navigating that intersection is trying to see which lane the cars coming from Hilo side are in, especially at night or when it's raining. I can't see the pavement reflectors to know at a glance whether the cars are going to yield at the turn lane or come barreling through at 45 or 50 mph. Maybe putting reflectors on standup plastic poles between the lanes would help, although I know they'll get broken off in no time

Just like it's always been -- but people did it anyway.
DOT has said the 4-way traffic light at the intersection of Kahakai and Hwy 130 would work
Instead: 4-way light in front of the new fire station, and another at Post Office Road. Traffic between those intersections would then be slower, with plenty of gaps in the flow.

Sounds like a good idea Kalakoa. It sure would be easy for the cops to catch people running the light, and it would slow down the traffic. If only we had some influence on the decision making....

go back to teaching these idiots how to drive at HS....
anticipate!!! ...........dont wait, think, then react!!
same with all 3/4 HPP intersections, the Keaau Dump, Old Volcano Rd above Keaau Shopping Center etc.
all very easy intersections....
Big Island we have the same amount of people as an average larger City (190K), on 4,000 sq miles of land...
there is a good reason why we only have 11 signals in 500 square miles of land in Puna... because we dont need 'idiot signals' to tell us how to drive or when to turn...
pay attention, use common sense, dont rush or 'freeze up' ie learn HOW to actually drive

Intersections are with County roads, so I assume (perhaps incorrectly) that County has some say in the installation of traffic control at those intersections, similar to the way State cedes control to County where the highway passes through "town".
When Pahoa Village Road was paved, County stopped somewhere around Longs (on the grounds that they could not pave a State road), which suggests that Danger Intersection is actually State -- if true, County lacks appropriate jurisdiction to force issues at that intersection, hence my suggestion that efforts be focused on intersections over which County may have some influence.
Unfortunately this is mostly irrelevant: County will simply claim "we can't afford it", despite having plenty of money for "emergencies". Property tax cheats win again!
