Could Hawaii Geothermal Plant Become a Windfall...
#11
Has anyone read the article? There be gold in them ther wells. Maybe even some - MAGMA!

http://www.civilbeat.com/2015/04/could-h...or-public/

But Roxanne “RJ” Hampton, who has been researching Ormat’s operations, finds it hard to believe that the company isn’t interested. After all, she says, the company has known for years that the ground underneath the PGV plant is rich in lithium and other valuable minerals, such as high-quality silica, copper, zinc and even gold.

Hampton, who will be presenting her research findings at the council hearing, says the rewards of mineral extraction are simply too great for the company to ignore. “They know they are sitting on such valuable minerals — why wouldn’t they be interested?” she said.

The idea of extracting minerals from geothermal brine has been around for years — at least since the 1960s — but most attempts at commercializing it have failed so far.

Woohoo! Drill baby, drill! We can all get our annual dividends from the state just like they do in Alaska! Maybe I'll start drilling in my back yard!

This could be a very slippery slope;
First, lithium extraction
Next, manganese nodule processing! (Or is that where this started?)

These SOB's have never stopped trying to find some way to monetize their assets

Wow Jim that was a pretty hateful post.

I was going for sardonic not hateful perhaps you missed the hints - it might be time for you to realign your 'sarcasmometer'

This is an exciting topic that has the potential of benefiting EVERY person in the state by bringing in millions of $ in annual revenues. I don't understand why it is not of more interest to everyone and why many posts are taking it so lightly. Please support the local control and ownership of our mineral rights and obtaining appropriate royalties.

My 2cents (and why I think this endeavor is worth about that currently)

First penny - The instigator for this effort is RJ Hampton, whose reputation for irrational beliefs and behavior proceeds her. I was hoping she'd jump in here at some point as it would be educational to ask her some questions.

Second penny - As noted in the article, and quoted here, the idea of extracting minerals from geothermal brine is decades old, but the technology is just not there yet. Unless PGV is investing tens of millions of dollars in secret underground technology, or transporting billions of gallons of brine off-island for attempted processing at a test facility, the minerals aren't going anywhere for quite some time.

Extra hay penny - The mineral rights are already protected and separated from geothermal operations in current laws (although these also are entangled with soverignity land issues)

All this said, it will be interesting, and likely entertaining, to watch this presentation at County Council (if we don't get a preview before then, RJ Smile

You mispelled "Oahu". The rest of the state will see no benefit.

Ironyak - I would think that RJ Hampton would love to respond with her 2 cents worth, but she has been kicked off the Punaweb for quite some time thanks to Rob Tucker. Rob, do us all a favor and allow RJ back on the site so she can respond and clarify any questions and/or elaborate on the topic.

Kalakoa - I didn't try to spell "Oahu", I spelled "State" correctly and I meant the entire State like Alaska citizens all benefit from their oil royalties. You could have both State and County royalties that would be in the millions and would go into their respective budgets. These funds would benefit EVERYONE.

RJ has not been kicked off. She can post if she wants to.
Assume the best and ask questions.
