because we have ONLY 190,000 people on over 4,000 square miles of land...
this isnt San Francisco, where you can sync the lights every block.. and why should it be??? so you can get to Ken's 1 minutes faster from Safeway or Target??

No need so many signal lights.
Try roundabouts.
Safer. Less congestion. Lower fuel use and pollution. Lower lifetime costs.

Try roundabouts.
Everything is already built up to the road, so getting the necessary space would be expensive.
Maybe if "everything" weren't in Hilo, or if there were ubiquitous broadband...

Being on an island where we have to import all the fuel, it makes sense to reduce the use of that fuel, don't you think?

It makes sense to reduce fossil fuel consumption or any methods that add greenhouse gases regardless of location.

i'm more or less concerned with the 50,000 or so people that use the 10 square miles around Hilo. Don't have much of a problem with the other 3,990 square miles.

perhaps to begin with, we could optimize a few of the bad areas. who is in charge of such things at the gov't level? is this a county or state issue? i'd be up for some organized lobbying.

Many intersections with plenty space, including the one now being re-done along bayfront.
Roundabouts take up more space right in the intersection, while the turn lanes associated with signal lights take up more space in the approach to the intersection. In many cases, the total space (i.e., pavement) is no more for a roundabout.
Note the big difference between roundabouts and signal lights:
Once the roundabout is built, there is minimal maintenance cost. In contrast, once a signal light is installed, there are years of maintenance and replacement of parts (bulbs, switches, etc). Signal lights are a cash cow for those certain private contractors who are favored with contracts for signal light installment, parts, and service.

James,
Let's be realistic. Replacing traffic lights on Hwy 11 in Hilo with roundabouts will take decades; several years just to get it planned and approved and then decades to build them.
Much cheaper to sort out the lights as other places have done around the world.
If roundabouts are built in the next 20 or 30 years, I'll be astonished. But by then we'll be discussing putting traffic lights on the roundabouts.
Think I'm joking? I've seen it before.
