Where to buy Appliances
#11
Good timing - just ordered a fridge from Hilo HD today. I called yesterday and got a call back. I knew waht model i wanted. It wasn't in stock (actually there was a damaged floor model, but they didn't want to sell it no matter what bc as the salesman said, "I have no way of knowing what that's been through." Delivery is free, yes, and they do hook it up for you.

terracore - Great Sears stuff. Ha! I have SOCKS older than their computers. I don't think they can even MOUSE - pretty sure they have to tab and use the arrow keys. We have gotten help there, but I just don't like how they do business, so avoid it at all costs. Sale one-day only, have to use Sears card, etc. It's no wonder they're closing stores. If you love 'em, buy from them now. I wouldn't trust they'd be in business later. Also, they do have stuff in stock, but if you want to pick it up, you have to go over to the warehouse on Leilani (Leilani? not sure) to pick it up.

edit: fixed typos

Sears.com works pretty good if you can wait.If you have a sears card you get 5% off and no payments for a year.If you buy 3 appliances you get an extra 5% and if you buy 4 you get 10% off.

The warranty id thru the manufacturer.

Here is a current Home Depot story.

One of my neighbors has an 8 month old Samsung electric range. The oven quit heating so they called Home Depot.Got a call back that there is no one on this Island who services Samsung.(They probably didn't want to use the competition,Sears.)
They offered them their money back and they have to buy a new range at a much higher price !

We've had nothing but good experiences with Sears salespeople and Sears repair service. Twice while delivering new appliances, they've pointed out scratches Or minor imperfecations that we didn't notice and offered us discounts or replacements. When we've needed warranty repairs, they appeared quickly and got the problems resolved on the first visit.

Our Home Depot experiences were all negative. A washer we purchased had numerous issues, and their mainland-based service department took 3 weeks to identify an island-based repair technician. Their technician had to order parts (2 week delay), then discovered he'd ordered the wrong part (additional 2 week delay), and then after his final repair attempt, the washer began leaking. Since this was our vacation rental machine, we couldn't afford to be out of service, so we went back to HD to buy a new washer. The same sales clerk who sold us the first washer said "That model is a piece of junk, we get lots of complaints about it." To which we replied "then why did you recommend it to us last time, and why do you still sell it now?" Needless to say, we beat feet back to Sears...

To make this thread as helpful as possible I added a new feature to my long-ass post where I put the timeframe in brackets. I don't want someone to think that I had some great experience (or a bad one) somewhere and that it was in 1994 and I'm still bitching about it.

Example: "But we never waited more than a few days before delivery so the appliances were on the island somewhere. [this has happened within the last 2 years]"

btw, also bought a range from HD same day as ordered the fridge. The stove was in stock, delivered today, which was 2 days later; the delivery guys (Big Island Movers) hooked it up and were very nice. Also, 5 yr extended warranty was $125 on the stove, $150 on the fridge. (doesn't really add 5 yrs, adds add'l year to make it 5 years) Sears extended warranties we got last year on washer and drier were $249 each, and I believe it only added an additional year or two. (Fingers crossed never have to use any of them!)

So I guess it all depends on what you get and how it holds up.

btw, had an on/off button on our Whirlpool dryer all of a sudden not work. Flipped the circuit breaker off then back on, and the darn thing was fine. Stupid electronics!

Hilo ProPAIN ... They have the some awesome stove products, just be educated when you go.

HomeCheapo agreed, not everyone in that department has real world experience ... One has NONE an' just does what they say to say ...

We are off grid and we bought from Home Depot. We ordered a hot point propane stove that only requires a 9v battery. It cost less than $500 and was delivered for free. I did the conversion to propane myself, which was pretty easy. We also purchased a stackable washer/dryer, with a gas dryer. It was around $750 after all the discounts, and was also delivered for free. I also did the conversion myself, which was a bit more difficult and time consuming than the stove.

We also purchased a small Vissani fridge from Home Depot, and it was less than $500, and also delivered for free.

I've only had these applianced for a year or two, so can't speak to how long they'll last. They're all working great so far.

I don't know if they still do it but when we bought 3 appliances at HD at the same time we got discounts on the extended warranties. Like buy two and save 10%, buy three and save 15% etc. In 2012. I don't remember what I paid anymore but it seemed like a good investment at the time. If I remember right the cost of the warranty is based on the price of the appliance (higher end appliance = more expensive warranty)

Our dishwasher from Lowes was really expensive but we wanted to get a good name brand that had high reviews. The 5 year extended warranty (total of 6 years) was $109 after excise tax.

We are off grid - we buy from local mom n pops as much as we can.
Hilo Propane has everything needed for stoves - fridges - freezers and they also do a great job in repairs .
They have a long list of the different types of propane sold on island and the owner whose name is Joe will take the all the time needed to explain in every detail all your questions .
We like the pure propane Hilo Propane sells as it is not the ag propane that clogs orifices with soot and the pure propane burns hotter - a more complete burn .
They have stoves in stock along with propane fridges - all are converted to propane instead of natural gas and ready to go .
We bought about 15 years ago a brown stove /oven combo and have never had any problems - same with our gas fridge and freezers -both solar and propane and they are as good as new some 16 years later .

Sears is a nightmare to deal with, the only reason in our opinion they stay open is the automotive department .

HD and their appliances are hit and miss but have a wide array of many items not found anywhere else .

terracore - yes, they still give 10% off the extended warranties if buying more than 1 at a time. Prices I quoted were before the discount.
