Chaing Mai Thai Restaurant

Nam Prik: Nam (water) Prik (chile), hence 'chile water'. Thai salsa, sort of.

Probably could kill some bacteria on the previously-used rice!

Carrie,

You must check out Sombats. It's near Ken's Pancake house. It's very fresh and flavorful. Possibly the best Thai food hubby and I have had. Be prepared to wait for a table on weekends and some week nights.

We've been to Chaing's for dinner. It was good, but forgettable.

I have yet to taste any Thai food eatery here in Hilo that can even hold a Banana leaf to Keo's Thai Food in Honolulu. The few Thai places I ate at here in Hilo were nothing to write home about. Actually my wife said my cooking is better than the few Thai places we have eaten at so far..

Jerry & I took a cooking class from Sombat once. She uses fresh herbs & spices grown locally. She described how she thinks food should be beautiful as well as taste good. She illustrated this by showing us how she cuts carrot rounds into little flowers. She is very personable and conscientious about the food. Everything we have had there has been wonderful.

When you drive up Kanoelehua you will see Sombats on the left just before Ken's House of Pancakes.

I have to admit, I have never eaten at Sombat's place. But it is now on my list of places to checkout!
