I think the advantage of going to a bike shop you can compare first hand. Try to safely lift up the bikes. The heavier bikes should be cheaper. So try to pick the lightest cheap bike. Though more factors to consider after that.

Another advantage to going to bike shop is buying your appropriately size bike. The seat post should be raised so that your leg is extended at the bottom of the pedal instead of having scrunched up knees.

Yup yup. This is similar to what I ride. You want the fat knobby tires for the dirt/bumpy/gravel roads, and the suspension (shock absorbers, basically) for your back's sake. It's not going to win any races, but it will burn just as many calories.

Lots of choices here but they do charge a hefty fee for shipping to HI.

HOTPE: So true, thank you.

Is there also a registration for the dirtbikes/mopeds/quads I see zipping around the acres? I need something to visit friends in and not tear up my suspension any more. Would prefer not to pay that registration on principle!

Amazon ships you a bicycle and they won't even ship me a 12v water pump? Either you're on the good list, or I'm on the bad list!

It's a cheap bike with alot of bad reviews...maybe they can't get rid of them. Here's the link on Amazon. They wouldn't deliver to my P.O. Box...but they took my physical address in HPP.

I got a $200 mountain bike at Walmart "Schwinn Sidewinder" sev yrs ago. I used to ride up Kaloli to 22nd and across to Makuu down to Kaloli Pt 5-6 days a week, even in the rain, for sev months...until it just got too dangerous. Then I started riding regularly down in the lower HPP area.

I still use that bike. $200 bike...it has served me well and wracked up a lot of mileage. I've only had to change out one tire..minor work on the chain just recently. Wind through your hair, beautiful scenery, no fighting traffic.. perfect place to ride bikes. Happy biking everyone!

P.S. I did change the seat out in the beginning for a more comfortable one. Makes all the difference.
