I do appreciate the feedback. This does help myself and others that are thinking the same thing. Give it to me raw = the feedback. I would rather you hurt my feelings than sugar coat it.

Avoid the mom and pops and go corporate. Less discrimination and more mainland style.

Minimum wage is basically what is available eric s .
Unless you are highly skilled oahu is a better option .
Ship your ride on PASHA .
rent 1st - at least 1 year.
Even if you do get a job here , more than likely they will fire you just shy of 90 days.
Bring at least a minimum of 15K to 20K with you as you will go through most of that in the 1st month just settling in.
OR come here on vacation for a month and see if what you might think is do - able really is not .
Oahu is better for sure .
Best rethink as if you never came this island in past and do not know any one it will suck you dry and spit you out .
Austin Tx has more jobs than all of this island and maui.

EricS - I guess a valid question for you is what amount of pay are you wanting or needing? Without that info, it is hard to give you any advice. Heck, Walmart, McDonald's, etc. locally all start at over $10 hour, but maybe you need much more?

Our unemployment rate is lower than the national average and we see many employers struggling to find people who will show up for work every day. If you are reliable you will do fine. There are a number of stores getting ready to open. I'm referring mainly to entry level jobs, but once you have local employment record you can either move up where you are or look to upgrade.

We haven't found the "haole" thing to be that big of a deal. There is racism everywhere, most of the people who find it here only find it because they were looking for it.

The people who don't make it here, are the ones who try to bring the mainland with them. And I don't mean bring THINGS from the mainland.

Sometimes you say EXACTLY what I am thinking.

Terracore probably has it right. Attitude is key to success here. Be humble and polite, on time and hard working. Mainland values like "self-starter," go-getter, gung-ho energy, are less valued here. Not saying this is good or bad, probably equal parts both. The nail that sticks up gets hammered down. Those things that make mainland America the world leader are less valued here. Hell, even politicians end their spiels with "I humbly ask for your support..." When was the last time you heard a mainland politician say anything like that?

Hey Carey, thanks for the info. Care to elaborate on those PLC, optical tech and comp hardware jobs?

Thanks

These jobs are not up every day, but a hand full a year do come up - if you have optical electronics, esp with PLC, the observatories usually have a couple of jobs a year...
PLC with diesel.... between the power plants & bio, usually there are a couple openings a year
Comp techs, have seen openings at the banks. resorts state & county... again a few a year...

It is not just about going on job search sites, since you gotta get yourself out there... join groups that have people with a broad range of backgrounds. Volunteering had helped in his job search, he even made a contact at the dog park..

These are jobs that come up, as current employees retire or move on, or as new position open up, so it is best to really get to know people in the fields HERE.... that is how DH acquired both of his jobs...people knew his skills & when a job opened up, he was one of the ones considered... but he found all of the jobs he applied for by doing the work of checking the ads & the company job sites of places he KNEW had jobs that he had the skills for... and applying for a lot of positions & going on a few interviews...

In addition with the recent graduating class at UH Hilo and with public and private schools out for summer or close to end of the year, the jobs get scarce - even the high tech jobs.
One must be here and do the searching - some times can be weeks or months or another way if a person has the needed skills and back round be it in high tech or service industry jobs do exist.
Our ohana knows a woman through our church who had come from mainland and was homeless at homeless shelter for a year .She took low wage jobs prior to be hired at a entry level job in high tech .
Now 4 years later she is top manager with over 200 employee's under her.
So yes there are jobs here .
Patience is a virtue.
