Ok, I know all that, and your comment, ("sometimes I wonder if you really live here..."), was rude Kapoho Joe.
I know about the alternate routes but they lengthen the already lengthy travel time considerably, coming from Mt. View.
I also know I'm not alone in considering this factor of the drive.

If I were to go, I'd go via redroad from hawaiian shores. May take a bit longer but.... it's pretty smooth as long as it's not raining too much...otherwise hard to tell how deep those potholes might be when filled up with rain water.

Is Uncle Robert's still open? They still doing anything on Wednesday nights? Music/ vendors? Is it possible to get past the road block if you say you're going down there?

Yes it is still happening, more vendors and people every week. No idea if you can get past the checkpoints.

So I had heard at one point that anyone with a Hawai‘i ID could get a pass, but now the notices say “resident” only. Don’t know if they mean resident of the area you are driving too or resident of Hawai‘i. We are up in Volcano and miss coming down there...we have not ventured down there so not to impact those effected.

We were going to go last night but I was told by a friend that we needed a placard. Has anyone not from the evacuation zones tried to get through?

Official word is that you need to be a resident (although it differs depending on who is on guard). People have been meeting up at Longs and carpooling with those that have placards. System may or may not work next week given the new official statement on this topic. See FB for more details.

I'll give it a try next week although I'm still not clear about a "resident" of what?
