I suspect if you run an advertising campaign telling them to get away from scary creatures and come and see lava instead they will see it as patronizing and insulting. Of course, people from Australia find the current activity fascinating, so do people from the rest of the world. And all this because you "reckon".
Tom, I have Asperger's syndrome, and I am unaware of what I have done, specifically, to annoy/piss you off. With that said, I know I did something, because I have Asperger's syndrome. I apologize for being ignorant or dickish, or possibly both, in however many instances that has occurred in the past. There's not a lot of people I actually respect online, and your education, combined with your work with the observatories, has earned my respect.
I also did not envision that campaign as either patronizing nor insulting. I respect the Australian people for being tough and real. I was raised in a trailer park in california, spent several years in rural Idaho, and spent most of my life in rural settings. I value tough and real as some of the core traits of existence.
I don't want to piss you off, you're an actually useful person who provides useful information and works a useful job. The vast majority, myself included, are barely useful people who barely contribute anything. All I was trying to do was amuse, and I apologize for being an idiot.

Thank you for sharing that. I had not realized that previously, I don't post in here a lot, but I am glad I ran across this post.

If you don't mind... I am going to quote that
Please do!
Portion of Hawaii’s drinking water that comes from underground wells : 9/10
Gallons of raw sewage that leak into the ground from Hawaii cesspools each day : 53,000,000 - Harper's Index

If you don't mind, HOTPE, I am going to quote that in some future talk I give!
Of course, in order to properly use a telescope as a horoscope, one needs to look thru the opposite end, so that instead of looking at starlight from the distant past, one can see the future. That's just common sense. [:p]

Glassnumbers,
FYI I do not have aspergers, and I liked your post about marketing to the Australians and saw nothing insensitive or offensive in your writing. Besides, Australians tend to be lots of fun and would be a pleasure to have around whenever we are ready for tourists to return again. That clearly is a wait and see reality, all quite uncertain at this time. I'm doing my best to enjoy my "vacation" from the tourist industry. Cheers!

Friends who own a small scenic tour business have had all their bookings cancelled. And artist friends who have their art at the local Hilo stores have been severely impacted... The background helicopter noise throughout each and every day is a constant and seems to be the new norm nowadays. It's most annoying when it's one after the other...life has changed for everyone. But nothing compared to those that have and are losing their homes. We know 2 now that lost their homes 3 days ago. I can't imagine losing one's home and your source of income on top of it.

Lodestone, that'll end up with our primary mirror falling off its mount and leaving six tons of broken glass on the floor, so will need quite a bit of clearing up. Unfortunately, we're not an Amazon Prime member so ordering a new mirror will mean some fairly expensive shipping charges.

Thank you Dayna, Punatic, for the encouraging words, and Kalakoa for the amusing lyrics! I feel bad about derailing this thread as far as I have, and I spent a good 15 minutes trying to think of something I know about Hawai'ian economics. I suppose I could say that uh, I don't think Ka'u will be effected much, there isn't a lot of tourism flowing to Ocean View that I know of, Punalu'u bakery routinely gets tour buses full of people even now with Kilauea going off. The rest of Ka'u is typically economically depressed and the businesses are small, so this period seems more like business as usual for Ka'u.
