We had one outside our bedroom window for years. I miss him and his bellowing. If you catch this one alive I'll take him off your hands.

quote: I have a little tilapia pond with a family of these bullfrogs. I love them. They are not nearly as loud as coqui. In fact I find their call to be soothing. Serenades me as I sleep. They are awesome predators to have around the house eating everything that can fit into their mouths including coqui. If you do capture it and want to get rid of it, the frog legs are edible.

The coquis themselves wouldn't be bad if only there weren't several times the natural density due to lack of predators.
I once saw a video of someone catching frogs from a boat with a small red ball on the end of a line/pole and a hand net. They would lay the net just below the surface, swing the ball out towards the frog, then gradually retrieve the ball in a way tantalizing to frogs. The frog would apparently follow the ball right over the net. I don't know if they were bullfrogs though.

they go catatonic if you turn them upside down. The trick is doing it before they pee all over you!
As far as coquis compared to bullfrogs, I can’t say. I guess the I’d have to go with the bullfrogs since they are easier to take care of....* *I do not kill them.

quote:Not sure how that would work. Specifics of our situation: the pond is above ground. A rock wall enclosure (loose rock) was built and inside the bottom was lined with sand. A vinyl liner went on top of that, to a height of approx. 18 inches (so nothing sharp can be part of the solution!) The pond is roughly 8’ x 15’ And loaded with lily pads, which makes dragging problematic. Also there are several large koi that I don’t want to injure or kill. Inside the liner another layer of rocks were added, mostly to hide the liner (but giving the frog plenty of nooks to hide in). He never leaves the water, and rarely allows me to even get near the edge before he dives back down and settles into the muck at the bottom of the pond. If you still think you can catch him, please let me know! |
