Where are you going to rent if everything is destroyed by a hurricane? Not much to rent now, won’t get better after a hurricane.
My insurance also covers rental for 12 months, so I asked my agent about the rental situation. He sort of just shrugged.....

When I first bought on the Big Island I called Allstate because that was my long time insurance on the mainland. I was to;d by a local agent that they wouldn't insure me in lava zone 2.
My neighbor tried an agent in Honolulu and they accepted us.
I was fully compensated for losing my home, vehicles and all my belongings under their fire coverage.
Kind of pricey starting out but the discounts build up the longer you stay with them.They don't cover hurricane or lava flow though.

Those are excellent points, and the USAA agent did discuss the "you get what you pay for" aspect of their policy. They are also AAA+ (or whatever) rated meaning that there is little possibility that a major catastrophe would leave them unable to pay out claims. Dongbu is based out of South Korea and who knows what that means. And the Yelp reviews of Dongbu are horrible.
But at the end of the day, I've had some form of renters or owner's property insurance my entire adult life and have never made a claim (and the same can be said for my parents). Our biggest liability risk is our farm animals getting out and causing mayhem, or some idiot trespassing and getting kicked by an aggressive donkey, or somebody claiming our food gave them RLW. We have a separate farm policy for that, and part of the affordability matrix is skimping on insurance that is unlikely to be used and spending the savings on something potentially more likely to be used.

To: terracore - your points are understandable, and why I said everyone's situation is different. I have a family member who did have their house destroyed ( fire that spread from a neighbor ), and I sleep better knowing that if something happens, I'll be ok.
To 8fingers: If a hurricane hits Puna and takes my house, I'll look to see what island has the least damage, and go there while my house is being rebuilt. ( I'm retired now, and not tied to a job. ) If my vehicle survives, Kona side would be my first choice, but having come from Oahu, spending time in the haunts of my youth with old friends would be fine. I still probably wouldn't be able to afford Maui.
