Oh, and should say it's ATT out here.

On a good day I get 160kps. Sometimes it's all buggered up.

I have used verizon all around hpp and it works well most places, it was a little tough on near the ocean, other than that it worked fine. I just had cable internet installed up here in mountain view and no longer need the usb device, email me if if you are interested in avoiding the "contract" by having your own card

I had a Sprint card from my employer for a few weeks. It worked ok in lower Leilani. Not super fast but ok. My husband's Verizon card from his employer does not work here at all.

I just got rid of my ATT card during the 30 day trial. Despite their claims that 3G would be fast & the coverage better, it wasn't. 90% of the time the card buggered up my Macintosh & I had to reboot. Apple couldn't figure it out, AT&T couldn't figure it out. PC users seem to have a fine go with it, but still report odd behavior with certain web sites. I would recommend reading the user forum complaints before you decide to sign up. Keep very close track of when your 30 day trial period ends.

One thing that pushed me over the edge is the ATT overage policy. The plan says UNLIMITED, but if you read the fine print it's really 5GB per month. A few users on the AT&T forum got a nasty shock when they went over the 5GB limit. There is a per MB or per KB overage charge, no big deal right? Well, again the fine print says they round to the next GB. A few users went over by a little, but when that overage was rounded to the next Gigabite, they got a $400 overage charge. YIKES. Granted, it didn't work well for me, so fat chance I could go over, lol..but I was peeved by the fine print bait & switch.

Thanks everyone for all the info. I just called AT&T (they're at 333 Kileau) and they also told me 5GB a month (which is a huge amount; you'd have to be downloading movies to get over that) and the overcharge was expressed as "a quarter of a penny per KB" which is still massive per GB.

They also told me that I can return within 30 days but I'd still get hit with the $36 connection fee. The only way to avoid that is to return within 3 days. If you decide to sign up it's a 2-year commitment. I'm still considering it...

Thanks for the offer Bullwinkle but unfortunately I am near the ocean in HPP. Maybe useful for someone else.

I just purchased a Wilson mobile wireless amplifier. Took my reception from 1 bar to 5 bars. Faster, clearer, can be used for cell phones, cell phone with tethered internet or wireless internet boost. cost about $350. wilsonelectronics.com

I met a woman with a house on the red road who used one of those and it worked really well. She was off the grid for phone service and only had cell, but her cell would not work without the amplifier.

I use sprint, no monthly limits, works well here in HA. But I use an external antenna mounted on the roof, huge difference. They cost about 40 bucks on ebay, the one I use is a magnet mount designed for a car so should be mounted on a steel roof. Ground plane.

The 5 gb limit gets used up fast if you use it for watching movies, gaming, etc. Same monthly price, anyway.

you're lucky, I'd much rather have cable! I had Oceanic for years in Honolulu. Currently Oceanic doesn't go all through HPP. Right now it's only down by beach road where the "rich & the shameless", made an offer Oceanic couldn't refuse!

Right now I use Hawaiian Tels DSL service. It sucks big time! Or at least of recent months service has been sketchy at best down in lower HPP.
