I would love to have used Galvemet that you can get right here from Castleblock but our plans wouldn't work as the county won't let it span more than 7'.

You've got me curious now Nancy. What are you using that county does allow more than 7 ft span?. We have an open ceiling design, the galvamet completely supported by beams.

That Hi Rib panel is some interesting stuff. I wonder if it's food grade material and how long is it's life span?

David, I think Rob at Castleblock told me about the 7' span. Check with him, I think he will know for sure. I know it will span more than that...the 7' deal was a county thing.

Aloha,
Just found this forum and it looks active and informative. We are building in HPP, makai 3rd St this year; are currently in Colorado but moving by July. We have built all our homes here and have tons of experience but will have to shift some thinking for the subtropics. Metal roofing ?: I see a few homes in HPP with the smooth metal roofing that simulates tile. Any thoughts or info on this? How does it work with for catchment? I think our location is a little drier than some other places in Puna but I worry that the shape may be wrong for the area or the price too expensive. Mahalo for any info. Linda

I have never had a metal roof. With the heavy rain, does a metal roof sound off terribly loud?
I guess a metal roof is mandatory for a catchment system, but I wonder how the noise is tolerated?

We are staying in a cabin which has the metal on rafters and it can be quite noisy.

Lew we have stayed in large hotels and small B & B, and homes on island. At times it can be very noisy. The homes we stayed in had open beam ceilings with like tong and groove with metal roofing and skylights of corrugated plastic, that magically didn't leak! I don't know if it had any insulation but would guess not. We loved it and it wasn't driving us out, had to turn up the volume on the DVD, Castaway!! Tom Hanks! We got on the plane two days later and no problem there either!!

Good news for metal roof shoppers Blue Light Special in Aisle 5....just kidding
Anyway there is good news it seems that HPM and (Thanks John S. Rabi for getting me there) has a metal roof offering with a coating described as ULTRA COOL It is a product designed by BASF with the intent to make all colors equal when it come to heat reflectivity (is that even a word) So to answer an earlier question by Mella l It looks you could have any color your little heart desires and not worry about heat buildup, about 20 colors is what they offer. It is backed by a 20 year warranty and assures energy savings up to 65% depending on pitch. ![]() Goto www.basf.com/corporate/102104_ultracool.htm Kinda exciting I thought.... Aloha HADave
