I will bring a bbq, coals and lighter fluid along with the custard pies. Hopefully someone will bring something to cook on said BBQ.
Pam I hope you and Bob are feeling well again soon. Colleagues of mine have been real sick over in Kona this past week and seem to be having difficulty shaking it. Hope your's isn't the same thing.
Andrew

Glorious day! good clarity, sun (saw rains go by, had some sprinkles, but not even a downpour (which downtown DID get!)
Kayaking - Good
Food - Ono
Diving - Good
Meeting with friends - Priceless ;^)
Pam, the tide swing was noticable when you looked at the pools & such (in the morning there were more rocks then I have ever seen ... could almost walk out to the rocks without getting your feet wet! but no big currents or anything, the water was actually a little warm.
3 divers went in & saw the most giganticist green I have heard of.
PS. Andrew, NOAA has more than 3':
http://www.nmfs.noaa.gov/pr/species/turtles/green.htm
USFWS max about 4'
http://www.fws.gov/northflorida/seaturtl...turtle.htm
& CCC has the largest ever as 5':
http://www.cccturtle.org/sea-turtle-info...page=green
but some other sites ref. over 6'
Anyhoo, I am sure that George Balaze would love a photo of your hefty guy (esp. to look for id marks & such)

Hi Gang:
Great beach day yesterday!!
I took a few photos which can be seen here:
http://www.divehilo.com/Dive-08-05/index.html
Carey the HUUUGESTEST turtle is the one titled "A very large turtle" (number 8 and number 9. Is it a green or loggerhead?
15 people made it to the beach day including as Carey mentioned 3 divers. Sorry I don't have any after dive photos but my camera batteries died out.
Anyways enjoy the photos and see you again next month.
Andrew

What are the two fish in the second last photo. The one is a juvenile with coloring similar to the clown fish that we were discussing yesterday?

I said yesterday 7 feet long from nose to tail and John said at least a full arm span from fingertip to fingertip. So his estimate was about 6 feet. Unfortunately I didn't have a tape measure with me so I can't be exact. However I'm pretty sure it was the largest I've seen to date and I have seen quite a few.
One thing for sure it was both giganticist & huuugestest or in other words... well pretty big.

Turtle? can not tell exactly, can you tell how many Pleural scutes are on the side from your photos? loggerheads have 5 pair (5 per side) greens & hawksbill 4 pair... (those are the side shell pieces of the carapace, they also have a very brutish head/neck normally with little neck distiction, your photos do look more like a green based on having a neck, but can not be positive as the head is turned....)
For the length, if you have an idea of where the ledge it was at, you can probably get a very good approximation
fish
Orange fishy is Lolo - juv. Hinalea 'Akilolo (juvenile yellowtail coris, Hawaiians had separate names! or the Coris gaimard (ie clown in french)
striped is Pa'awela (Ornate wrasse or Halichoeres ornatissimus)

Well, lucky for me I didn't see you had already responded to the question about the juvenile yellowtail coris, Carey. I missed that there was a page 2!! Anyhow, it awakened my interest in fish i.d. I have seen that fish many times and always liked it. See page 322 in Indo Pacific Coral Reef Field guide for a good picture of the yellowtail coris, part of the wrasse family. Good shot Andrew![^]
Pam, you and Bob were missed but it was a lovely Scuba Sunday. Jim and Scott took over the BBQ. Since it was rainy when people first arrived they snagged the shelter behind the old Richardson's house. So as the weather varied between clouds, drizzle and sun, people migrated back and forth between cover and sitting in the sun. I can recall visiting with at least 15 people, including Bill and I. So it was a good turnout. Jim, next time we will come prepared to get wet!

I think I may be able to find that ledge again. I think I may print the picture out and take it next time in a zip-lock-bag to locate the ledge and also bring a tape measure. I know it was at about 60 feet deep and I know the general direction. Should be interesting and fun to try.
Regarding the pleural scutes along the carapace: Unfortunately I trashed the hi-res photo after I put it up on the website so I can't tell if there are 4 or 5. Shoots, can't count the scutes. [
