Garden Exchange sells the quadularis ... I was really excited about the first fruit I got and then realized the regular lilikoi are ever so much nicer, but the flowers! Gorgeous.
I wish clematis would grow here, because I miss it, but I don't think clematis can handle not having any chill. I could see the roots rotting here. I love clematis, grew many varieties of it in California, and would certainly grow it if I found it here. My last house I did a "mixed" ornamental and lilikoi living fence. I kind of went overboard with varieties. The lilikoi was the workhorse, but for accents of color I also like: Dipladenia (the red cousin of mandevilla) Mandevilla Pink jasmine (jasminus polyanthum) Petrea volubilis (Queen's wreath aka sandpaper vine) Pandorea Clerodendrum (bleeding heart glorybower) Thunbergia skyflower is beautiful if you can restrain it. Also myorensis. They've had this at Garden Exchange recently. Then blue jade vine and red jade vine are simply spectacular but you have to wait a couple years for the flowers.

Mahalo KathyH, for the several good ideas for vines. I'll have to look up most of these but that's always fun! At least I now have someplace to start my search for the right something for this spot. :-)

Carey, that's a beautiful flower and a generous offer! I would love to get some cuttings. Thank you! :-)
Where are you located? aloha, Liz "The best things in life aren't things."

We live in Downtown Keaau, down from the Puna Hongwangji Mission. Can also bring cuttings to the Punaweb Party at Davids....

Clerodendrums grow GREAT from cuttings, too. I've had my trimmings take without rootone or anything.
Liz, all the vines I mentioned are ones I've bought in Hilo, either at Paradise Plants or Garden Exchange, nothing rare. However, a month or two ago I went looking for some vine action and there was very little available. They told me to come back in the spring. Lilikoi's were in stock though. Just don't buy the pink flowering passiflora that's known as banana poke, because it drops seeds (as fruits), they all sprout, and it's invasive. There's a red-flowering passiflora I got at GE last month that was a hybrid, meaning it can't reproduce from seed. Passionflower can get out of control in the tropics, so I ask questions before I adopt one. Thunbergia, for instance, is gorgeous, but it's invasive. Go to Akaka Falls and see. It's safe to plant if it doesn't have jungle/forest to escape into. Huapala (pyrostegia venusta), is another pretty vine that's way aggressive. Be careful if you decide to plant it. I had one that practically ate my house and yard. Another vine I've bought here is carolina jessamine, with small yellow flowers. There are some pretty allamandas coming out now too, a blush color that's really lovely. The yellow ones will climb tall trees; the magenta ones are slightly more restrained. They don't "vine" as nicely as some because they don't hold on by tendrils. They weave in and out, sometimes needing guidance. Ed to add to watch out for climbing woodrose and morning glory. Very very hard to control and self-propagating like crazy. Woodrose flowers are lovely but it just smothers others plants.

Kathy ~ You are a wealth of information! :-) I do want to avoid planting invasives. I think I have a perfect place for lilikoi along a chainlink fence; if I add some flowering vines too, that would be even prettier. Thank you for all the ideas and info!
Carey ~ I will be passing through Keaau tomorrow (Wed) and could easily swing by your place. I think we will try to make the Punaweb party at David's, so that could work too. Thank you both! I'm learning a lot :-) aloha, Liz "The best things in life aren't things." |
