Didn't someone on this forum say they used the beer method to bait the slugs, but ended up putting their dog in rehab :-)

We stripped some old copper wire and wrapped it around our trees and potted plants...the snails wont touch 'em. It's pretty cool.

Stillhope, not sure if ALL property has the slimmmy buggas, but we had 'em near the shore in HPP & have them in town in Keaau.... along with the Giant African Land Snails.... those GALS are hard to drown in beer... as they are so BIG & they will plug up snail traps, their mouth bits in the trap slurping the beer & the rest stuck outside like Winnie the Pooh! (have seen them bigger than my fist, & I do not have petite paws!) I have found that copper protects my most delicious & delicate plants & vigilance in snail/slugg hunting seems to work best (technically no chickens or ducks here.... some neighbors do have... & we probably may... when all is said & done.... some day/year...

We used to have loads of GALS as well as slugs. Since the chickens have been on patrol, we've not only not seen the GALS and slugs, but we haven't seen many centipedes, either. Ducks are really good with slugs, too, if you happen to have a few ducks.
Jay, once your 110 Airborne Division actually gets old enough to be airborne they will also dig and scratch in your garden as well as eat the slugs and bugs so young seedlings need protection. They generally love to scratch in soft new tilled and especially newly seeded ground. I've discovered the new use for the "chicken tractor" is a "cornfield protector". Instead of fencing the chickens in, it now fences them out while the corn gets a chance to get big enough to fend off scratching chicken feet. It is great fun to watch them fight over a centipede, too, so it is a good thing to let them continue the campaign against bugs. (Unfortunately, they will also campaign against grapes, peaches, tomatoes, strawberries and all other tasty things within reach of their beaks.)

Actually, the semi-airborne division was out all day as I was pouring concrete and monitoring them closely, to keep the wiley mongoose away.
This may sound like a goofy question, but are the big land snails edible? Seriously?

No, they tend to harbor all sorts of nasty bacteria etc. Like the one who does serious damage if they get in a water tank (possibly lethal).
The big FF specials with contrails, they do kind of like fillets, and 2 would make a meal.

My crop of snails isn't doing so well. Did the copper coil thing months ago, and spread some slug bait too. With all this dry weather, they seem to be giving my plants a break these days.

StillHope, we are in HA mostly open landscape and we have planty of slugs. The beer thing didn't work for us so we resorted to some store bought slug bait.
We have six chickens now but I have no way of letting them run loose. Ground is to uneven for the chicken tractor and fencing would be too expensive for such a large area.

Our garden is so in the beginning stages that we only get cukes so far. We only have a few plants that are starting to fruit now...of course, before too long I'll have choke lilikoi to trade/share. Still doing research on our up and coming garden shed/greenhouse.
