Have been to shiva celebrations, and it is not really the same, the mood here was much more up beat with the poker & all...this is why I missed the fact of what it was...

I do understand the time needed for all of the relatives & family to get here, yet the older neighbor died almost a month ago & so there was a longer period between the death & the 9 day wake than I am accustomed to... But I am glad I asked & Gypsy responded so well & quickly...

As for time off, most companies allow 2 or 3 days, the rest you CAN get off, but as vacation, personal or non-pay...

Carey, it just might be that they are a Buddhist family and following the 49-day period of transition for the deceased to move from this world to what is going to happen for him next- liberation, wandering, god life, or reincarnation/rebirth. Praying for him and helping through the change may be going on simultaneously with the celebrating/poker playing.

Nope, though many of our neighbors are Buddhists, this neighbor goes went to the Catholic Church in town... and most of the neighbors that are Buddhists have the large gatherings at Puna Hongwanji, usually the home visits are much more intimate & less boisterous...

This was the first long wake gathering with the poker playing type activities since we moved here, and that was the part that I was not accustomed to, and Gypsy shed light on... Thanks!
