There are so many valid POV's here. It doesn't suck that there is an L&L in Pahoa though. There's a Blane's Drive-Inn in Orchidland and all hell didn't break loose there. The chinese food place was REALLY expensive and L&L is inherently a Hawaiian style place...I dunno about Long's since there's so many already. If it's just for pharmacy it doesn't make sense. If it's a drugstore/variety kind like next to Safeway or Bank of Hawaii...then there are many products it would be nice to have in our neck-o-the-woods.

115 new minimum wage jobs in Pahoa? Sounds great to me. Now I can haul my retired butt to Pahoa and get some part-time work thats close to home and have some needed spending money!

It will be nice to have a Longs out here. Some of us depend on the $4 prescription programs offered by Longs and Walmart. Unfortunately, I do not believe that "John the pharmacist" can help those of us with no prescription coverage. Not having to drive all the way into Hilo to refill will be great.

the fun part about this thread is considering the change in perspective from not so long ago when we were all discussing the potential of a lava flow crossing highway 130. well it's a fact, all those people moving into puna need places to spend their money, and there's enough people with enough money that the businesses surely would be jockeying to be in position to be taking it. and nope, the cutesy rundown plantation town look aint gonna last. remember keeau, and all the effort to save a few of them run down plantation town type buildings? wasn't mcducks gonna build to blend in? the bottom line is we're gonna get more highways, and get more stores, so everyone can come and go and get more more more.. well at least until the next time the mountain decides otherwise

Can global-corporate fast-food survive the cost of food-miles that takes beef patties from Iowa and chicken pieces-and-parts from Tennessee all the way to Pahoa? Investment is about confidence. I can't muster the necessary confidence to reckon this is where I'd put my 'long-term' investment.

We'll still buy our drugs from John the Pharmacist, but glad Longs is coming in for the other stuff they offer.
We never buy junk food (Malama Market fried chicken excepted) and hope most folks will continue to get their fried birdies from Malama. Can't imagine KFC competing with Malama's chicken for quality.
btw, I'd love to see the buildings in Pahoa get a little tlc and new paint, but hope the character of the town won't change drastically.

Here is my take on Longs... I grew up in S. CA and they were king there for a very long time. Through M & A they are now a different company... still if they can bring drugs in at a lower price... it is a good thing. You are right.. .dakine... until the mountain decides otherwise. Absolutely.

I guess there is something of a marketing synergy there.
After feasting on KFC and BK, you'll need to get over to Longs to get you BP and cholesterol meds.
